Wayfinding with ADA & Braille Signage

Signage that complies the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and National Standard of Canada CSA/ASC B651:23 Accessible design for the built environment regulations.

This type of signage is a requirement for all new buildings to comply with building codes across North America. These signs are required in all public spaces and where employees may be working. It is not required for private residences unless that residence has spaces that are accessible by people other than the intended occupants, i.e. condominiums do require the use of tactile and Braille for signage in hallways and entrances.

We offer a range of products and design ideas that comply with these requirements and we work with architects, builders and developers to provide signage that complies and meets code in Canada and the USA.

  • Wayfinding is the art and mechanics of creating and displaying signage that helps orient users and guides them through their environment. In terms of signage, this term is often used to describe the signage that effectively communicates directional and destination information to users in a way that complies with the corresponding regulations that govern their use.

  • Wayfinding is needed for most public spaces to guide people through to their desired destination. It has been developed and improved upon over several decades and is now codified in law, both in Canada and the United States, ensuring that signage is made that will be useful to all users. Beyond the requirements codified in laws regulating the need for these signs, it is an effective and positive way of making the lives of building users easier and less stressful.

This improves every users experience with signage and with the building or environment they are in. These codes help everyone find their way.

  • Yes, all buildings must have effective wayfinding signage within them as long as they are accessible, in any way, to the public.

In Canada, the regulation that codifies the manufacturing requirements is known as CSA B651-23 - Accessible Design for the Built Environment. The use of this code is included in every provincial building codes across Canada.

In the United States, the Americans with Disabilities Act Title II Regulations codify the requirement for these signs in all States. The codes created for this act are found in the ICC Digital Codes under the 2017 ICC A117.1 in Section 703.

Each of these regulations are designed to guide the use of effective signage that does not exclude people that have vision limitations.

  • If you are working with a registered architect, they are the registered professional that is responsible for ensuring that the design of the signage meets code and that you will comply with the standards in each province or state. We, often, design this signage for the architect or provide designs for the building owners, with the architect reviewing and providing final stamp as required by each working area.
